Velly Teddy ‘Simbarara’ Thwala (40) from Barberton has been convicted of the premeditated murder of his girlfriend, Nontobeko Nosipho Msithini (19), and has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court.
Thwala was witnessed pushing a bag with blood dripping from it in a trolley by community members. Upon investigation, they discovered Msithini's lifeless body inside the bag.
Nyuswa recounted the events leading to the murder, stating that on the evening of February 18, 2023, Thwala woke up to find his girlfriend missing from his residence. Upon learning that she was seen with her ex-boyfriend at a local tavern, Thwala, armed with a knobkerrie, sought her out. He assaulted her severely with the weapon, ultimately causing her death. Subsequently, he put her body in a black bag.
During the trial, Thwala dismissed his legal defense and chose to represent himself, pleading not guilty to the charges. Testimonies from witnesses, including one who saw Thwala attack the victim and others who witnessed him moving the body in a trolley, along with Thwala's own confession upon arrest, were pivotal in securing the conviction.
